Most popular FAQs

Is there any down time when switching to Hyperoptic?

Your Hyperoptic full fibre broadband service can be activated right away once your installation is complete and your router is connected.

If you have a Hyperoptic socket but no router, we’ll send you one within 48 hours. So long as you connect it within 24 hours after it arrives, your service should go live right away (or on your requested activation date/move in date).

Do I need to cancel with my existing provider?

Usually, yes. But you can also use One Touch Switch, which is much easier. With this service, you simply give us a few details and we take care of the rest by cancelling your current contract for you.

We’ll also ensure your old service doesn’t end until your new service is up and running – so you don’t need to worry about downtime during the switch.

To switch to Hyperoptic with One Touch Switch, simply enter your postcode on our website to get started. If you’re not able to use One Touch Switch for any reason, you can still join Hyperoptic without it.

Do you have to pay to switch Broadband?

Depending on your contract type, and how long you’ve got left in any commitment period, you may need to pay termination or exit fees to leave your existing provider and switch your broadband. For example, if you signed up to a 12-month contract and want to leave in month 10, you may be charged for the 2 remaining months left on your commitment period.

Please bear in mind, there may also be some install or activation fees associated with getting up and running with a new provider – but, if you’ve found a service you prefer with another provider, or if they’re offering better value, you may find that it saves you money in the long-term.

Some providers also offer options to help make switching easier – even if you’re stuck in contract with someone else. Hyperoptic’s Switch Now offer gives new customers up to 9 months free while their existing contract ends, which means they don’t have to pay any extra fees and will be ready to switch over fully when the time comes.

Do you need to tell your old broadband provider if you’re switching?

If you already live at the address where you’re ordering a new broadband service and switching from another provider, we’ll make things easy for you by arranging this with them on your behalf. This is called One Touch Switch.

If you’re moving to a new address and want to switch broadband providers, you typically need to cancel with your existing provider. You don’t need to tell them who you’re switching to, but you’ll need to tell them that you want to end your service with them.

Although it differs from provider to provider, most have a cancellation policy which requires you give them advance notice if you wish to cancel. You should be able to cancel by contacting them via email or phone, or an online customer portal.

Am I eligible for a cheaper Broadband via a social tariff?

Most broadband providers offer cheaper broadband packages for households where at least one person is claiming universal credit, income-related employment and support allowance, pension credit, income support or income-based jobseeker’s allowance.

These can be called ‘social tariffs’, ‘essential’ or ‘basic’ broadband packages and are delivered in the same way as other packages just at a cheaper price.

Hyperoptic’s social tariff is called the ‘Fair Fibre Plan’ and applies to our Fast 50Mb or Superfast 150Mb packages on a monthly rolling basis, from just £15 a month. To check if you’re eligible, click here.

Have I got the best broadband deal available in my area?

Confirming whether you’ve got the best broadband deal available in your area depends on a few different factors – including speed, reliability, flexibility, customer service and price. You may want to do a little research and compare different providers to check what deals are available in your area. This can include visiting comparison sites – and we’d also recommend checking Trustpilot for some real customer reviews.

If Hyperoptic is available in your area, you can rest assured that you’ll be getting the best possible value on our full fibre broadband. We offer a price match guarantee, which means that if you can find the same package being offered by another broadband provider for less, we promise to match their price.

How do I check if I’m out of contract?

The quickest way to check on your contact status is by asking your broadband provider. You can do this over the phone or logging into your account online. This information might also be available on your latest bill.

All broadband providers are now required to notify customers 10 to 40 days before their contract is about to expire so you should receive a letter, email or text telling you that your contract is coming to an end. Under current regulations your broadband provider must contact you every year that you’re out of contract with information about your current tariff and the best deals available to you.

If you have less than 9 months left on your contract, it is worth checking if you are eligible for Hyperoptic’s Switch Now program, which will give you up to 9 months free service while your current contract ends.

Why should I switch broadband provider?

If you’re not happy with your broadband provider – or you think you could be getting better speed and price, with better customer service and a more reliable connection – then you should switch.

And being stuck in contract with your current provider shouldn’t stop you either. Hyperoptic’s Switch Now offer gives new customers up to 9 months free while their existing contract ends, which means they don’t have to pay any extra fees and will be ready to switch over fully when the time comes.

What is One Touch Switch?

One Touch Switch is a new process that makes switching broadband providers easier than ever.

If you’re looking to switch broadband and/or phone services at your current address, you simply need to give a few details and the new broadband provider will take care of your switch. This will involve ordering a new broadband service and taking care of cancelling with the existing provider on your behalf and ensuring your service doesn’t end until the new service is fully up and running. So you’re never without a broadband service.
