What is a leased line?

A leased line is a dedicated fibre connection between two points that is rented from your ISP.

This means dedicated internet access, so no-one else shares your connection. It’s also symmetrical, so your business will receive equal upload and download speeds.

What is a leased line

How can a leased and dedicated fibre lines help your business

Leased:

If your business is reliant on a good connection to communicate with customers or stakeholders, you can’t afford for it to let you down.
With a leased line, your business will get a more consistent connection, faster repair times and less downtime. Plus, with symmetrical speeds up to 10Gbps, a leased line will futureproof your business and keep you ahead of the competition.

Dedicated:

With Dedicated Fibre, our leased line product, you’ll get a dedicated internet line and bandwidth that you don’t share with anyone else. Just uninterrupted, symmetrical speeds with ultra-low latency direct to your business.
Give your team the power to work with bandwidth-hungry applications like online CRM systems and Office 365. Choose from 100Mb, 1Gb or 10Gb packages, all available on a range of contract terms.

Symmetrical:

Have you noticed that your download speed is much faster than your upload speed? Most broadband packages sacrifice upload speeds to benefit download speeds. This works well for consumers – customers who use
their broadband to stream video, scroll social media and consume content in general.
With a leased line and dedicated fibre lines, the upload and download speeds are symmetrical. This means they are both hyperfast – all the time. This keeps your business running at top speed.

Future Proof:

A dedicated fibre optic leased line prepares your business for the future.
Broadband speeds are only going to get faster, and we’ll only ever demand more from our ISP. A leased line is the very best you can get. With a Hyperoptic leased line, you can go all the way to 10Gbps.

How does a leased line work?

A leased line (also known as a dedicated line) is a private telecomms circuit rented by an individual or business for exclusive use. Unlike traditional internet connections that are shared with other users, the bandwidth is reserved exclusively for you.

What is the difference between a dedicated line and a leased line?

The terms “dedicated line” and “leased line” are often used interchangeably, and their meanings can overlap. However, in some contexts, they might be used to refer to slightly different concepts.

A leased line is a private telecomms circuit that is rented or leased for exclusive use. It is a dedicated connection that provides a constant, reliable, and high-bandwidth link between two points. Leased lines are commonly used by businesses with high connectivity needs.

The term “dedicated line” is more general and can refer to any communication path that is reserved exclusively for a particular purpose, whether leased or owned. It can encompass various technologies, including leased lines or fibre connections.

What is the difference between leased line and broadband?

A leased line, which is often more expensive and more likely to be used by a business due to their connectivity needs, provides a dedicated connection between two points, such as between a business location and an internet service provider’s network. This means that the bandwidth is reserved exclusively for the subscriber, and it is not shared with other users. Leased lines also sometimes come with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that guarantee a certain level of service, including uptime and performance.

Broadband, on the other hand, can be more cost-effective but is a shared connection where multiple users share the available bandwidth. This can result in contention, especially during peak times, which may lead to variations in speed. While broadband services are generally reliable, they may not come with the same level of SLAs or guarantees as leased lines, depending on the provider.

Most popular FAQs

Is a leased line a good investment?

You get what you pay for when you invest in a leased line. It’s important to consider what your priorities are as a business. A leased line will provide a more consistent connection, symmetrical upload/download speeds and faster repair times.

If your business utilises cloud services, relies on connection to communicate with stakeholders or prides itself on delivering excellent customer service online, then a leased line could be an important investment.

Is it worth it for my business?

A good way to answer this question is to ask yourself, “what would happen to my business if my internet connection went down?”:

  • Clients can’t communicate with you

  • Customers don’t get the service they expect

  • Video-call meetings have to be cancelled

  • Cloud-based work can’t happen

What would that mean to your business, to your bottom line? Time is money, and if a leased line can keep you connected and keep you productive, then the ROI could be huge.

What are examples of leased lines?

A leased line (also known as a dedicated line) is a private telecomms circuit rented by an individual or business for exclusive use. Unlike traditional internet connections that are shared with other users, a leased line provides a dedicated and symmetrical connection, meaning the upload and download speeds are the same (although you can get symmetrical speeds with some broadband providers without a leased line – including Hyperoptic).
