From 2 to 2,000 people – Hyperoptic’s 11 year growth story as it continues to lead UK full fibre ‘altnet’ market

From 2 to 2,000 people – Hyperoptic’s 11 year growth story as it continues to lead UK full fibre ‘altnet’ market

October 12, 2022

  • Hyperoptic is 11 years old this week
  • The company has gone from 2 to 2,000 employees, and has this year reached the milestone of 250,000 active customers with greater than 25% penetration rate
  • New £25 1Gb broadband sale announced to celebrate
  • Longest serving customers set to receive 11 months’ free broadband as thanks for loyalty

Hyperoptic celebrates its 11th birthday with two milestones reached this year: 2,000 employees, and 250,000 active customers. The company continues to set the pace among ‘altnet’ full fibre providers in the UK, with a market-leading penetration rate in excess of 25% overall and at 40% in areas where Hyperoptic has been present for more than one year, and a sustainable business model.

The company is close to a third milestone of reaching one million homes passed, which it expects to hit before Christmas. Its full fibre network is available in 64 places across the UK.

Hyperoptic was founded by current CEO Dana Tobak and current Chairman Boris Ivanovic. It was the first to make gigabit broadband available in the UK when it connected Prices Court in Wandsworth, London in October 2011, when the average UK broadband speed at the time was just 6.8Mbit/s. In 2019, leading global investment firm KKR acquired a majority stake in Hyperoptic.

Hyperoptic CEO Dana Tobak said: “We’re not just building a fibre network, we’re connecting homes and businesses to fast, reliable broadband – reaching this 250,000 milestone with an overall penetration rate above 25% is down to the teamwork and focus of our 2,000 colleagues. There is a lot of excitement around the full fibre market here in the UK, but not every company laying fibre today will be around long term. We’re ensuring we have a sustainable business model that will see us continue to grow and attract investment.”

To celebrate the 11th birthday, Hyperoptic is offering a new deal – 1Gb full fibre broadband for £25. The deal will run until 26th October 2022, and is available via the website, chat, or phone. Hyperoptic has also identified the five customers that have been using its hyperfast service since the 2011 launch, and these customers will receive free broadband for the next 11 months as a thank you for their loyalty.

As well as offering hyperfast speeds, Hyperoptic also offers a range of competitively-priced, flexible packages. And Hyperoptic’s set of social tariffs provide essential broadband connectivity for those facing increasing cost of living pressures.
